Matthew Shiflet is a graduate of Ohio Connections Academy (OCA) from with Rutland, Ohio. Prior to coming to OCA, Matthew and his family tried a local public bricks-and-mortar school, home-schooling, and then private school. At his private school, Matthew’s family felt that the curriculum was taught at slower pace than what he needed. In the seventh grade, Matthew enrolled in OCA where he found the best of both worlds—a challenging curriculum and the ability to work at his own pace. He shares more below.
“There were so many aspects of OCA that I loved. Most of all, I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to work at my own pace. Whether I was sick, if there was an event I wanted to attend, or if I wanted to focus more time on a project, I was able to move forward on my own so I wouldn’t be late in completing assignments.
Sometimes people find the concept of online schooling difficult to understand. I explain that OCA is a great program for flexibility, growth, and for unconventional learners who don't fit into the bricks-and-mortar schools. OCA has given me great opportunities and has prepared me for my future, and I often tell others that it could do the same for them.”
After graduating from OCA, Matthew enrolled in the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University and continues to pursue his passions for video game news journalism and public relations in the technology industry.
