COLUMBUS, OH (May 8, 2013) –  Ohio Connections Academy high school Social Studies teacher Daniel Wakefield was recently recognized as a national runner up for the 2013 National American Pioneer of Teaching Award presented by PublicSchoolOptions.org.

Wakefield who lives in Boardman, Ohio, was described by this national alliance of parents who support access to the best public school options for their children, as a teacher who reflects the “creativity, enthusiasm and dedication that make public school options work for students across the country.”

Parents, students, and interested community members nationwide took part in the competition by submitting the nominations and casting votes on the organization’s Facebook page.

“My nomination for the Pioneer of Teaching Award is meaningful to me because I was nominated by one of my students. It also challenges me to continue to grow and develop as a teacher, to acknowledge the importance of being a source of encouragement for students, and to never forget the impact that all teachers can have in the lives of their students,” Wakefield said. “I strive to create lessons that promote active learning and require critical thinking and analysis.  It is always rewarding to see students who become engaged with history as a process, and who become interrogators and investigators of historical events and questions.”
