Nevada Connections Academy students win nationwide math competition

February 1, 2016 — While most students were watching TV or lounging around during winter break, students from Albert Scariati’s 6th grade Math class were hard at work completing math problems for the nationwide Think-a-Thon challenge. The Nevada Connections Academy students were recently named winners in the Winter edition of the online contest.

Think-a-Thon, created by Think Through Math, is an online challenge that allows students to compete with other classes and students across the country to see who can earn the most THINK Points for solving math problems.

Mr. Scariati’s class earned more than 5,000 THINK points during the final week of the contest, and was selected as a winner out of more than 111,000 classrooms across the country. The 18 participating students completed 55 math lessons and earned 23,698 THINK points, averaging 1,316 THINK Points per student. This win was a particularly great accomplishment for Nevada Connections Academy, as students were logging in and doing math work over the holiday break.

In addition to the math challenge, students were given the opportunity to donate their earned points to a charity. Think Through Math converts students’ earned points into a donation to a select charity; December’s points were donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Across the country, participating Think-a-Thon students completed 73 million math problems and donated more than 100 million THINK Points which translated into a total donation of $10,000 to St. Jude. Three students from Mr. Scariati’s class donated a total of 30,000 THINK Points.
