Student Voices: 2016 Graduate Speaker Hannah Iverson
Nevada Connections Academy
My name is Hannah and I’ve been going to Nevada Connections Academy for 5 years. I started in 8th grade after having some trouble in middle school, and I truly believe it’s one of the best decisions my family and I made. Like many of you, I am very busy outside of school, and have spent a lot of time learning how to balance it all. I’m very honored to have been asked to talk about perseverance. I believe we have all had challenges to overcome, and it’s how we do it that counts.
First, let me say what is most important. Congratulations Seniors! We did it!
I also want to thank Ms. Whittenburger for believing in me when I did not believe in myself, pushing me, helping me in off hours and most of all just being an amazing influence and teacher.
They asked me to share some of the obstacles I’ve overcome. Wow! I figure you don’t want to hear all the details so I thought I would give you a quick overview. You may have experienced some of these challenges, or others. What’s important isn’t if they are the same, it’s that we all have things to overcome.
During my time at Nevada Connections Academy (NCA) I have lost 3 of my grandparents. I am so grateful that, because of NCA, I was able to be with each of them when they needed me and, while it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, I wouldn’t change a second of it for anything!
My senior year brought a couple of extra challenges. I was in 2 car accidents and have spent almost the entire year in rehab. It has been so frustrating, at times I just wanted to scream! But I pushed through, and am so glad I did. Because look...here we are, graduating high school and getting ready to start a new chapter of our lives.
“Don’t be afraid to go after what you want do and what you want to be. But don’t be afraid to pay the price” – Lane Frost
Staying strong while times are tough is one of the hardest things to do. When someone tells you can’t do something, whatever you do don’t you dare believe them. You can do whatever you put your mind to.
If someone says you can’t do something and there are people out there who will, you make sure and make it a point that you can. Prove them wrong. Let the haters hate. You can do whatever you want, some things just take a little more time. Dream big. No dream is too big!
We have been in school for 12 years, 13 if you count Kindergarten. Through elementary school and thinking that someone taking the swings from you was the end of the world, to middle school and the struggles of getting a top locker and how awful the bottom locker was. Trust me I know I had both. High school and everyone saying freshman year was the hardest and thinking it was then getting to junior year and thinking it was going to kill you because I know I did. You can do whatever you set your mind to! Just work hard and fight for it! Through late nights, early mornings, aggravation and the start of senioritis at the beginning of the year.
After all that, Class of 2016, I have one more thing to say to you! WE DID IT!!
