Connections Academy, Leading Virtual School Provider, Graduates Record Number of High School Seniors
--Diverse Senior Class Heads to Four-year Universities, Community Colleges and Vocational Programs with more than $7MM in Scholarships--
Baltimore, MD (June 28, 2013) – Connections Academy, a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable virtual schooling for students in grades K through 12, is celebrating the graduation of its largest ever senior class at the end of this 2012–2013 academic year. In a mark of the high caliber of the graduating class, the more than 2,075 twelfth graders from 23 Connections Academy virtual public schools across the country* were awarded more than $7 million in scholarships to pursue their educations, an almost 66 percent jump over 2012 total scholarships.
Connections Academy’s 2013 graduating class is 52.3 percent larger than its class of 2012 graduates, reflecting the rapid growth of the virtual school program. Almost 60 percent of Connections Academy graduates intend to continue their education and immediately enter four-year colleges and universities or community colleges, roughly on par with 2012 figures. However, the proportion of students intending to attend four-year institutions jumped significantly, with 26.9 percent of graduates going this route, up six percent over 2012. Approximately eight percent will attend vocational schools, and 26 percent will enter the military or start careers—figures that remain stable from 2012.
CA graduates have been accepted into more than 365 different colleges and universities, including prestigious higher education institutions such as: Stanford University, the U.S. Air Force Academy, University of Notre Dame, Northwestern University, New York University, University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and more.
“We congratulate the Connections Academy class of 2013 and wish them continued success as they move on to college, or whatever their post-secondary plans may be,” commented Barbara Dreyer, president and CEO of Connections Academy.
We are really proud of our talented graduates, whose success is testimony to the power of our rigorous, highly personalized public education to help students succeed to their fullest potential. A Connections Academy diploma demonstrates a high level of student achievement, and it’s really gratifying that so many colleges and universities are recognizing the high caliber of Connections Academy students.
The Connections Academy graduating class of 2013 represents a diverse and accomplished group of students. Connections Academy graduates come from large families, single-parent households, major cities and small towns, from coast to coast. Senior standouts include Gilbert, AZ, resident and Arizona Connections Academy (ACA) graduate Emily Martin, who received a full scholarship to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Emily, ACA’s National Honor Society president, credits the flexibility of the virtual school environment with helping her pursue her love of gymnastics—the accomplished gymnast often trained eight hours a day—while also making real her dream of flying fighter jets.
