BALTIMORE (October 15, 2012)Connections Education, the leading virtual education provider, has been honored with multiple national awards for curriculum excellence. A division of Pearson, Connections Education, was named a winner of three ComputED Gazette’s 17th Annual Education Software Review Awards (EDDIE Awards) for its outstanding curriculum, spanning elementary to high school grades. The virtual learning leader was also named a finalist for the Association for Educational Publisher’s (AEP) 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award honoring excellence in learning resources. 2012 marks the third straight year that Connections Education has won EDDIE curriculum honors.

Connections Education won 2012 EDDIE Awards in the following categories:

  • UPPER ELEMENTARY Social Studies Website: State Course–Utah—This state history course engages Utah elementary students with virtual timelines, Google earth tours, and interactive presentations showcased by robot avatars. The course delivers a state-mandated introduction to Utah state history in which the student traces the state's history from the early history of Native Americans up through the present time.  Connections Education also developed and delivers similar courses in state-mandated history to elementary students in Georgia, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
  • MIDDLE SCHOOL Foreign Language Website: Elementary Chinese—In this course, students learn Mandarin Chinese through conversations with a native speaker, cultural explorations, and storytelling. Many interactive components—such as real-time, two way audio and video chat—introduce and engage students with the Chinese language and culture.
  • HIGH SCHOOL Virtual Lab: The Lab Investigator: Virtual Dissection—In this multi-media science site, students watch certified biologists perform step-by-step dissections of various specimens and then they perform virtual dissections on their own. Students can also research facts about the organisms they’re dissecting.

In addition to winning three EDDIE Awards, Connections Education’s K–5 Language Arts Whole Curriculum was also honored as a finalist for the 2012 AEP Distinguished Achievement Award honoring excellence in learning resources. This elementary school Language Arts Whole Curriculum starts by helping Connections’ youngest students build a foundation for successful reading, with activities centered on phonics, listening, comprehension, and vocabulary instruction. Older students continue to build reading fluency and comprehension, with daily exposure to a range of works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, while also practicing handwriting and writing skills. Older elementary students are challenged to grow their critical reading skills by analyzing a wide range of written materials, while also drafting increasingly complex texts themselves.

The AEP also honored Connections Education with its 2012 Beacon Award recognizing outstanding marketing of educational products, for its 2011–12 Program Guide.

The EDDIE Awards recognize innovative and content-rich programs and websites that augment the classroom curriculum and improve teacher productivity, providing parents and teachers with the technology to foster educational excellence. Selection criteria include: academic content, potential for broad classroom use, technical merit, subject approach and management system. Winners are selected from titles submitted by publishers around the world. CompuED Gazette has served as an online education resource for educators, parents and students for more than 16  years.

Honoring excellence and innovation in the education community, the AEP Awards evaluate and honor curriculum resources based on three principles: quality content, age appropriateness, and innovation. The AEP Awards are the longest-running and most highly regarded learning resources recognition program in the industry.
