Commonwealth Connections Academy Wins Educator of the Year Award

Honored for innovative use of the mobile classroom at Pennsylvania Technology Awards

March 22, 2011 (Harrisburg, PA)Commonwealth Connections Academy was honored with the Educator of the Year Award at the 2011 Pennsylvania Technology Awards on March 18.  CCA received the award for the school’s dynamic use of their mobile classroom and the use of technologies to educate, motivate and inspire students to become lifelong learners.

CCA competed against other educational institutions such as Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Kutztown University, Pennsylvania State University–Harrisburg, the State College School District and Carnegie Mellon University. The Technology Awards, held by TechQuest Pennsylvania, have been honoring area leaders in technology and innovations for 19 years.

“I was ecstatic to see that our innovative use of technology and creative programs was dynamic enough to win the award,” said Michael Wilson, a Secondary Administrator at Commonwealth Connections Academy, who accepted the award on CCA’s behalf. Wilson manages CCA’s mobile classroom initiative.

“It was also great to see Harrisburg University and Carnegie Mellon beside us on the distinguished list of nominees. We have ongoing partnerships with both organizations throughout the year for mobile classroom activities. These partnerships allow us to create extremely unique learning opportunities for our K-12 students to work with college students and professors on a higher level; promoting tangible and engaging uses of advanced math and science activities,” continued Wilson.

Throughout the 2010–11 year, CCA has partnered with Harrisburg University for several integrated activities, including a Sweet Sciences event—where students participated in science labs regarding the science of taste—and an upcoming BioTech Showcase. Other notable partnerships include the Boy Scouts of America’s Harrisburg/York and Lancaster/Lebanon Councils. CCA Students and Boy Scouts will utilize the mobile classroom’s technologies to learn about the environment and sustainable fishing, while incorporating additional workshops to earn Boy Scout badges.

“I was thrilled to learn CCA was named Educator of the Year, and I’d like to congratulate all our staff and teachers that have made the mobile classroom such a valuable learning asset for CCA students this year,” said Dr. Dennis Tulli, CEO of Commonwealth Connections Academy. “We plan to grow this program moving forward, and are excited to be offering many new activities and partnerships throughout the state.”
