California Connections Academy @ Ripon Earns University of California "A-G" Course and Lab Approval for Biology, Chemistry, Physics Courses

Students of Leading Online Public School Eligible to Meet California’s Standardized College Admission Guidelines for Science Courses and Lab Standards

Ripon, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2014) – California Connections Academy @ Ripon, a tuition-free online public school that serves students in grades K-12 who reside in Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Santa Clara and Stanislaus counties, has received University of California (UC)-approval for its biology, chemistry and physics courses, including lab requirements. The availability of these courses and lab components will help students satisfy entrance requirements for public universities in the UC and California State University (CSU) systems.

“We are so pleased about this milestone achievement for our program and virtual education overall,” said Amy Hunt, site administrator at California Connections Academy @ Ripon. “The addition of biology, chemistry and physics courses and labs to our list of UC approved courses allows us to guide our students to post-high school success at the type of college they desire.”

Schools requesting approval from UC must demonstrate that particular courses prepare students for undergraduate study in “a-g” subject areas, established by the Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS) as minimum eligibility for freshman admission to the UC and CSU systems. To meet the requirements, California Connections Academy has developed rigorous curriculum in biology, chemistry and physics, and will coordinate with students four times per semester to visit a local lab to conduct hands-on experiments, ensuring they have the experience needed to prepare them for college science courses.

“This is an incredible opportunity for my son Duncan and all of his high school peers,” said California Connections Academy @ Ripon parent Irene Burgess. “California Connections Academy’s flexibility, curriculum and opportunities for AP and gifted coursework will really help him remain competitive in the college admission process. I’m able to work one-on-one with his teachers to individualize his education in a way that works best for him, which gives me great peace of mind that we can help him achieve his dreams.”

The school has partnered with Ripon Unified School District to use the facilities at Ripon High School, which was designed to allow for safe, supervised science exploration that gives them the ability to create and manipulate their own data within the lab. Connections Academy science teachers will guide students through various lab experiments that correspond with their curriculum, complementing students’ conceptual classroom learning with the applied scientific experience.

California Connections Academy offers 49 University of California (UC)-approved courses. For a full list of UC “a-g” approved courses, visit the “a-g” Course Lists page on the UC Doorways website and search for school “California Connections Academy @ Ripon”.
