California Connections Academy @ Capistrano Earns University of California "A-G" Course and Lab Approval for Biology, Chemistry, Physics Courses

Students of Leading Online Public School Eligible to Meet California’s Standardized College Admission Guidelines for Science Courses and Lab Standards

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2014) – California Connections Academy @ Capistrano, a tuition-free online public school that serves students in grades K-12 who reside in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, has received University of California (UC)-approval for its biology, chemistry and physics courses, including lab requirements. The availability of these courses and lab components will help students satisfy entrance requirements for public universities in the UC and California State University (CSU) systems.

“Earning ‘a-g’ approval with labs from UC is a significant step for California Connections Academy @ Capistrano and our students,” said Richard Savage, California Connections Academy’s executive director. “The UC approval for our biology, chemistry and physics courses and labs means our students can streamline their path to meeting California college admissions requirements. This has been a major priority for our school in our continued efforts to best meet the needs of our students.”

Schools requesting approval from UC must demonstrate that particular courses prepare students for undergraduate study in “a-g” subject areas, established by the Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools (BOARS) as minimum eligibility for freshman admission to the UC and CSU systems. To meet the requirements, California Connections Academy has developed rigorous curriculum in biology, chemistry and physics, and will coordinate with students four times per semester to visit a local lab to conduct hands-on experiments, ensuring they have the experience needed to prepare them for college science courses.

“We came to Connections Academy seeking a flexible schedule that allowed my daughter to study at her own pace and really dive into the material,” said Karen Voelkening-Behegan, a California Connections Academy @ Capistrano parent. “Olivia is a conscientious and motivated student, and now she has access to a rigorous curriculum in a setting conducive to her learning needs with hands-on instruction at a state-of-the-art lab facility multiple times a semester to supplement her learning experience. These course offerings give me peace of mind knowing she’ll be prepared for university-level science courses as a viable candidate at many of California’s top schools.”

The school has partnered with Experium Science Academy in Torrance, Calif., to use their lab facility, which was designed to allow for safe, supervised science exploration with equipment normally found in a university setting. Connections Academy science teachers will guide students through various lab experiments that correspond with their course curriculum, complementing students’ conceptual classroom learning with the applied scientific experience.

California Connections Academy @ Capistrano offers 49 University of California (UC)-approved courses. For a full list of UC “a-g” approved courses, visit the “a-g” Course Lists page on the UC Doorways website and search for school “Capistrano Connections Academy”, the school’s legal name.
