Secondary Teacher
Bachelor of Science, Statistics, Mathematics, and Mathematics Education, University of Iowa
Dashom Hong began her teaching career at Iowa Connections Academy in 2020. She currently teaches math for grades 6–9. Mrs. Hong shares her story below!
Why I Became a Teacher
I became a teacher because I want to support students who struggle in math. I know math is a difficult subject and it’s the least favorite subject for many students, but I want to try my best to help students develop mathematical thinking and relate it to their everyday lives.
The Online School Experience at Iowa Connections Academy
Since students can work at their own pace, they develop independence and a sense of responsibility. They learn how to be proactive by reaching out to teachers whenever they have any questions or need help. I love having the flexibility and the opportunity to have more one-on-ones with a student than in a brick-and-mortar school.
The most successful students have developed many executive skills, such as delayed gratification, time management, self-advocacy, and intrinsic motivation. In addition to professional communication skills, these are all fostered at our school and are things that students will continue to use well after high school.
Transitioning to online school can be difficult in the beginning, but all the teachers are here to help and support you. Remember that you are not alone and we want every student to be successful!

My Interests
I like to spend my free time with my husband and my two cats, Autumn and Summer. I also like to watch Netflix and play tennis, golf, and bowling. During vacation, I usually visit and spend some time in South Korea where most of my family members reside.
