Tara Madsen is a high school teacher at Iowa Connections Academy (IACA). She started teaching in 1998 and began teaching at this school in 2017. Ms. Madsen earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northwestern College and a special education and English language learners (ELL) endorsement from Morningside College. She shares her teaching story below:
“I became a teacher because of the influence of my second grade teacher. It just felt natural to follow in her footsteps because I have always had a passion for kids. My background includes 18 years in education, 17 years in special education, and 1 year of working with English language learners. One thing I love about teaching at Iowa Connections Academy is that we all have the same passion and focus, which is centered on the student.
“The benefit of teaching online is giving students an opportunity to use their talents and abilities that may not have been seen in a brick-and-mortar school. Receiving an education at Iowa Connections Academy gives students a lead in the possibility of further education through the online setting and teaches them discipline and self-motivation.”
Ms. Madsen has three children, one in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school. In her spare time, she is out and about following her kids and their activities.
The ability to complete an education online allows flexibility for students and gives them ways to be successful that students may not have experienced in their former schools.
