Keeping Virtual High School Students Connected

When it comes to attending a virtual school, many people assume students have few, if any, opportunities for socialization. The truth is, at Indiana Connections Career Academy (INCC), our students remain connected to the school-wide community through various platforms, like LiveLesson® sessions, school clubs, and field trips. LiveLesson sessions allow our students to interact in a virtual classroom setting, share ideas, compare experiences, and have fun learning together.

Given that all social activities are optional, our students can often decide for themselves what level of social interaction they’re most comfortable with and participate accordingly. These opportunities for socialization allow our students to explore the community and world around them while forming friendships with their fellow students, which gives students the chance to learn teamwork, gain social confidence, and develop communication and leadership skills, not to mention that these social activities are just plain fun!

Allowing Flexibility for Extracurriculars

At INCC, the flexible scheduling of the program makes it possible for students to participate in more extracurricular activities and to get involved in the community around them. Participation in these activities helps our students build character and confidence, two characteristics they’ll need to be successful in the future.

Working with Families

Families are an integral part of each student’s virtual education. We know that what works for one family doesn’t always work for all families in our program, which is why we keep our program flexible to accommodate the needs of each family.

Parents are encouraged to play a crucial role in the education of students at INCC, acting as Learning Coaches to help keep students on track with classwork and in touch with teachers. Communication between parents and teachers, community coordinators, and school counselors is easy both online and in person through:

  • The Virtual Learning Connections blog
  • Club ORANGE, a network of Indiana Connections Career Academy parents who are highly involved in the INCC school community
  • Local Learning Coach training and open houses
  • Message boards that allow a secure place for parents to post questions and find tips and resources for student success

Participating in the Community at Large

At INCC, we also want students to understand they’re a part of a broader virtual learning community. So, with help from Learning Coaches and community coordinators, we arrange volunteer activities and participation in other community events throughout Indiana.
