Why I Became a Teacher

I became a teacher because I love to learn new things and then share that knowledge with others and because I find purpose in helping others.

The Online School Experience at Coastal Connections Academy

I absolutely love getting to know my students and discovering ways to help them learn and grow. Teaching online actually provides more opportunities for me to get to know my students because the schedule is flexible and allows me to take time to speak individually with each student—[something]that a bricks-and-mortar schedule does not typically allow.

I start every lesson with a fun or interesting question that I ask all my students, which gives them opportunities to share with me and their peers. It only takes a few minutes, but it has a great impact on fostering our relationships.

Message for Families Considering Online School

Since students at Coastal Connections Academy are exposed to and learning communication and social skills that go beyond a virtual platform, they’re being prepared for a bright and successful future. Because I speak with my students regularly on the phone, this gives them the opportunity to practice pragmatics in a way [that they’re not experienced with] due to email and texting.

I would tell parents that this is an excellent opportunity for them to get involved and participate in their children’s learning. They will know exactly what they are learning and experience first-hand how their child is doing. I believe it’s a great way to build stronger relationships with them, as well.

Hobbies and Interests

I was born in England, raised in Michigan, and have lived in Florida for 15 years. I have an 11-month-old daughter and am expecting a second baby in August. I love spending time with my family, reading, and being outside and active — kayaking, running, dancing, and hiking are a few of my favorites! I feel truly blessed to be able to teach my students and am grateful to be part of the Coastal Team!
