Opposing the Spread of Nuclear Weapons

Two rows of nuclear missiles are pointed toward the sky.

The development of nuclear weapons by antagonistic
forces is a source of concern for the United States.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, a treaty intended to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, to promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and to further the goal of achieving disarmament, has served to decrease the threat of nuclear war and disasters. Many countries around the world willingly adhere to its requirements. However, some countries have continued to pursue the development of nuclear weapons. The United States and the United Nations, face the challenge of keeping these countries from posing a threat to the rest of the world. In this section of the text, read about how the United States negotiated with two countries to continue the efforts of limiting nuclear weapons worldwide.
