Learning Coaches

Milissa and Wesley are parents and Learning Coaches to three boys who attend South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA). The Bazzles are pleased that SCCA’s flexible scheduling is helping their sons to become more independent and responsible learners. They share their family’s story below.

"The boys have been homeschooled through private institutions since they were four years old. We felt it was important that our boys have a safe and productive environment in which they could learn, grow, and thrive without all the peer pressure and drama that many traditional schools have. We were never completely satisfied with the curriculum through homeschooling and felt that they boys were not getting the best education possible to meet state standards. When we found out Connections Academy was coming to South Carolina, we were excited!

We’ve been with SCCA since 2008, and I have to admit that in the beginning it was rough, but it was the right fit for my boys. It was a lot of work, so we had to learn how to really study and apply what we were learning. I’m glad that we stuck with it. Over the years, the teachers have been great because they really take the time to review and make sure that no one is left behind. Most teachers allow you to redo essays and reports. They also allow for test corrections so that students can receive the best grade possible, and there are tons of extra credit opportunities. Our boys always needed tutoring in science and math, and the teachers allow students to come in during office hours for weekly tutoring periods. These extra hours have really helped my boys to grasp the concepts and build from there. They have also learned to work independently, be accountable, and that the amount of effort they put into their studies affects their results.

We felt it was important that our boys have a safe and productive environment in which they could learn, grow, and thrive without all the peer pressure and drama that many traditional schools have.

As a Learning Coach, I appreciate the fact that I am involved with their learning and can help them understand concepts. We work together by having discussions about the material. I allow them to work independently, and then after they have completed a subject, we discuss the objectives and how they can apply it. They love the LiveLesson® sessions because it gives them the opportunity to get to know the teachers and other students.

Because SCCA offers a flexible schedule, we are able to keep up with friends and family. The main thing that our boys are interested in is volunteering in the community. The boys usually volunteer around 5 hours a week through Bible education. They plan their classes so that they have a half day each week and are able to help others in the community. The boys are also interested in art, guitar, and filmmaking."
