Andrew Mencer is a graduate student of Arkansas Connections Academy. Andrew became interested in Arkansas Connections Academy because he was bullied at his old school and wanted more support in the classroom. He shares his story below:

“What worked well for me in the program was being able to do my schoolwork when I wanted, how I wanted. I learned so much at Arkansas Connections Academy. I was able to study and apply the knowledge in ways that were best for me. I got to do my schoolwork in a comfortable environment and have my dog right beside me.

“My favorite subject was chemistry because I love science. I also liked history when we were covering World War II. I really liked my teachers, especially Mr. Wilson. My teachers helped me understand lessons and listened to me more than I ever got in my old school. These teachers were helpful and friendly. They made me feel like I belonged, and I loved having discussions with them.

What I loved most about Arkansas Connections Academy was the flexibility that it provided.

“I was able to volunteer at the local food bank each week. I got to sleep in. I was able to travel. I spent a month camping and doing school, and I was able to go to the World War II reenactment in Texas without missing any school.

“I saw the friends I made at Arkansas Connections Academy on school field trips and prom. I did outside activities like going to the movies, arcades, and the library with friends outside of school. At Arkansas Connections Academy, there was no bullying; my day was not rushed through. I got to spend more time on subjects that I needed help with and could move on through the ones that I did not. I got breaks and lunch when I wanted to have them. I was not limited to a rigid daily schedule."
