Pamela Nickson is the parent of and Learning Coach to California Connections Academy student Maya Nickson. She was searching for an alternative to the brick-and-mortar environment when she saw a commercial for Connections Academy on TV. The ability to learn quietly and privately made Connections Academy the right choice for her family.
“Online learning works for me and my family because we have a somewhat difficult time blending in with the way the world seems to be nowadays. My daughter is a very sweet, quiet, disciplined kid who is kid. She loves people, she loves life, and she’s very happy and at peace mentally. It was so hard at her brick-and-mortar school because not very many kids seemed to want to “allow” her to stay happy. She was horribly targeted and bullied because she’s not a fighter, and her grades and learning suffered indescribably. The safety and the nonjudgmental ways of Connections Academy were nothing shy of a blessing and an answered prayer.
We received more support from Connections Academy within this first school year than in our K–6th grade years at our previous school. I asked for tutoring help and received it immediately, without having to chase people down or feel like a bother. The teachers have been fantastic at responding to emails. All through the year, every note I sent was responded to the same day.
We appreciate how the students get to decide whether or not they are seen (via webcam) and/or heard (via headset microphone). I love how some of the lessons ask the kids to “share with your Learning Coach.” This always commands accountability from the kids and also provides confidence. My daughter appreciated showing me something versus me always showing her something.
My daughter wants to make movies, and I have no doubt she will. Connections Academy really supported her artful talent by asking her to make a stop-motion movie and display it at the end-of-year art show. She did it, and the teachers, parents, and students seemed to love it, but we had no idea the show was also a contest. She won first prize! This gave her more confidence than I can describe, and it has sparked an even brighter light in her goal!”
