Wendy Burns is a language arts teacher at Arkansas Connections Academy (ARCA). She has been teaching since August 2009, and she first started her career with Connections Academy in 2015. She graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University, in Hammond, Louisiana, with a bachelor’s degree in middle school education. She is highly qualified to teach language arts and social studies to students in grades 4–8.
Ms. Burns shares her story below:
“I know it may sound cliché, but I really became a teacher so that I could make a daily difference in children’s lives. In my past career, I was a hairstylist. I also worked with youth at my church for seven years, teaching Bible studies to small groups. I found that I loved the process of teaching and seeing excitement on the children’s faces as they had those life-changing aha moments. Teaching allows me to help children dream big and then go on to achieve those goals.
I love teaching at ARCA because I have the opportunity to partner with Learning Coaches and students and help each individual student learn and fulfill his or her academic potential. ARCA provides an excellent and rigorous curriculum that helps the student become independent and goal-driven, which also prepares students for excellent future careers.
The benefit to teaching at an online school is that I can help each student learn by way of our one-on-one educational relationship. This individualized instruction is not something I was ever able to accomplish on a regular basis with my students in a brick-and-mortar school. I also love that I have constant communication with students’ Learning Coaches and parents.”
In her spare time, Ms. Burns enjoys staying busy with her family. They like to bowl, hike, fish, and walk their three dogs.
