Kevin Vines is a high school math teacher at Arkansas Connections Academy (ARCA). He started teaching in 2007 and joined ARCA in 2019. Mr. Vines has an associate of arts degree from Arkansas State University–Mountain Home in general studies and a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Arkansas Tech University. He shares his teaching journey below:

“I became a teacher when I figured out that helping people learn gave the person knowledge and gave me joy,” said Mr. Vines. “I worked for the Census Bureau back around 2000 before I ever had my teaching degree. As part of my job, I had to teach a class of adults how to go about the Census business. What a wonderful experience! I absolutely loved it! I combined that experience with something I was pretty good at in high school (math) and started classes at ASU Mountain Home, working toward my teaching degree, and I’ve never looked back.

“The benefit of teaching at an online school versus a bricks-and-mortar school is the ability to have the one-on-one time with a student without having to worry about what the other students are doing in the classroom.” He also enjoys the ability to schedule meetings with students without worrying about interfering with another teacher’s time.

“ARCA helps prepare students for a bright and successful future because students are working from home. When a student is in an environment where he or she feels safe, the student is actually able to concentrate on the tasks at hand instead of worrying about all the nonsense that can go on in a traditional school building. With this focus, the student is able to excel to new heights and create a future that might otherwise not have been possible.

“If there was one thing I could tell a prospective parent as they are making the decision to enroll at ARCA, it would be ‘Don’t hesitate. If you’re looking for a school full of caring teachers that do everything they can to help your child be successful and a school that keeps the parents informed about what’s going on, look no further. You’ve found it.’”

Mr. Vines enjoys gaming, cars, and DIY projects in his spare time. If he isn’t doing one of those things, he’s on YouTube learning about one of those things.
