Amber Hayes is a physical science teacher at Arkansas Connections Academy (ARCA). She started teaching in 2016 and joined the ARCA family in 2019. Ms. Hayes graduated from the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith with a bachelor’s degree and went through the Arkansas Professional Pathway to Educator Licensure (APPEL) program for her licensure in secondary science. She is currently working on her master’s degree in educational leadership. She shares her teaching journey below:
“There are many reasons why I became a teacher,” said Ms. Hayes. “To begin, I started my undergraduate college journey studying nursing. However, I quickly learned that the hands-on aspect of the job was not for me. I still loved the science behind the medical field, so I knew that I wanted to teach our future medical professionals. I also became a teacher to be a voice for students. I grew up in poverty, and there are so many studies around poverty and how poverty affects education. I wanted to motivate and inspire students who face adversity, like poverty.
“I love that the ARCA curriculum is vigorous, challenging, and prepares students for college,” continued Ms. Hayes. “This ensures that I am teaching students to critically think and solve problems and helps students in future academic endeavors and in the workforce.
“The benefit of teaching at an online school versus a bricks-and-mortar school is that there is much more flexibility teaching in an online school. I’m better able to differentiate and provide personalized instruction for my students in an online setting. I am very new to this school community, but I can already tell that everyone works together. There is a strong sense of ‘ARCA family,’ which creates a positive, healthy, and nurturing teaching and learning environment.”
In Ms. Hayes’ spare time, she enjoys traveling with her family on cruises and exploring the Carribean. She also likes sports; her favorite teams are the Arkansas Razorbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals. She also likes other hobbies, including working in her garden, binge-watching Grey’s Anatomy, and playing with her pets.
