Khalil Gates is a middle school student whose passion for acting led him to explore flexible schooling options. His family decided to try Alabama Connections Academy, and since joining, he has enjoyed the freedom to be himself and explore his many interests. Khalil explains below what about Alabama Connections Academy works for his family.
“I love Connections Academy because it takes the stress out of school and allows me to work the way I want to work. I can do it at my own pace and not have to waste time waiting for others. I used to go to a traditional public school, but I’ve never been the one to run the same direction as the crowd, and this school helps me feel more like me. I am able to start my day how I want to start it without being rushed, and I can work where I want to work.
I feel very comfortable with my teachers. My favorite subject is science because I like learning about the world around me. My dream is to become a marine biologist. I like being able to work at my own pace and in creative environments. I also like that I can change up my environment and be outside on my deck sometimes and take in a beautiful day or sit in my room with my headphones on.
I’m passionate about modeling and working on movie sets. My brother and sisters and I all model and just recently started acting. We were recently in a Hollywood movie called Live!, starring Aaron Eckhart, Giancarlo Despacito, and Ben McKenzie. We needed the flexible schedule for opportunities like this to be able to take our work with us and make our own schedule. Either I can get my work done early if I know that I have an event to be at the next day, or I can bring it along with me on my laptop so I never skip a beat.
I stay in touch with friends by gaming online with friends and family, and I’m currently saving up to get my equipment to start my own gaming YouTube channel. I also love music, and I’m a quad drummer for a popular high school band in Birmingham, so I see my friends at drum practice daily. Additionally, my baby brother is a football player, so I go to practice with him and hang out with my other friends there. With my family, there’s really no dull moments. We are all really close and stay busy, so we like to close out the world, put our phones down, and spend time with each other.”
