Keeping School Students Connected

Even though online school eliminates the “typical” classroom setting, students at Alabama Connections Academy (ALCA) are part of a large community. Our students meet regularly in online LiveLesson® sessions and are given opportunities to share their ideas, talk about experiences, and have fun learning in a group setting. Your child will be able to choose his or her level of social interaction according to comfort, and will also have options to join any of our Connections Academy online clubs, or clubs in your community.

ALCA provides many ways for online school students to meet and learn, whether it is through school clubs, field trips, or special school events. These social opportunities give our students a chance to explore and discover the world around them and to form friendships with our other students. These activities empower students to gain social confidence, learn teamwork, and develop leadership and communication skills. Not to mention, they are fun!

Flexibility in Extracurricular Activities

We understand that many of our virtual school students are busy with activities and clubs in their local communities. Our program offers flexible scheduling that may allow students to participate in even more extracurricular activities. It’s our goal to help every student find and explore interests outside of their classroom in order to increase confidence and build character.

ALCA and Your Family

Familial support is a crucial part of your online student’s educational experience. We know that the same routine doesn’t work for every student or family. At ALCA, we give you freedom to design your schedule, whether it includes volunteer work, performing arts, sports, or other pursuits.

The parents of our students are given a very important role. As a Learning Coach, you (or another trusted adult) have the opportunity to help keep your child on track and communicating regularly with teachers.

Families can easily connect with teachers, school counselors, our community coordinators, and other parents in person or online. To help facilitate this, ALCA has:

  • Open houses, local teaching centers, and online Learning Coach training
  • Secure message boards where parents can post their questions, tips, and resources for helping students succeed
  • The Virtual Learning Connections blog, which lists tips and information specifically for Learning Coaches about a variety of topics for our busy virtual school families
  • Club ORANGE, which is a network of highly involved Alabama Connections Academy parents in our community and parents from other Connections Academy–supported schools across the country.

How to Participate in an Online Learning Community

At ALCA, we strive to help our students understand that they are a part of a much bigger online learning community. With help from Learning Coaches and our community coordinators, we are able to arrange activities and other community events throughout Alabama.
