Helping Students Succeed

With master’s degrees and specialized training in developmental and educational psychology, our online school counselors help students address the personal, social, and academic issues that can affect their success in school and in life.

At Alabama Connections Academy (ALCA), our virtual school counseling program is built on relationships, so our counselors are readily accessible to students and families—online, in person, and by phone. With the additional support from our national Connections Academy office and its collaborative network of school counselors across the United States, our counselors bring both individual attention and national expertise to our students and families.

Meet Shelia Daniel

Manager of Counseling Services

Shelia Daniel brings a wealth of experience to her role as manager of counseling services at Alabama Connections Academy. She was inspired by a high school teacher to pursue teaching and later decided to become a counselor. Always having had a desire to help students, she has a passion for fairness, justice, and helping youth find their direction.

When asked what she loves about the school, Ms. Daniel said, “Our students have so many reasons for choosing Alabama Connections Academy as their educational venue. I find it very rewarding watching and listening to their excitement for learning, and I enjoy working with each family as they uncover new and exciting avenues for learning. I also appreciate the involvement the parents/caretakers have in the success of their students’ education.

My favorite part of my job is helping students and their families achieve their educational goals in a nontraditional school. I also enjoy being a part of such an amazing team. I enjoy going to work each day. We are truly a family. Our administrative assistants, teachers, counselors, and administrators each take an active role in making our families feel welcomed. The field trips, clubs, and organizations, and even the state testing, help all of us meet our families face-to-face and form a connection that makes our families feel that they are listened to and feel comfortable.

When our students graduate from Connections Academy, I feel they will be prepared for an exciting future. They will have received a top-notch education and will have had the time to explore different parts of the state by making friends with other students in their classes from around the state. Our students have the time and flexibility during the year to export career opportunities and engage in a postsecondary quest.”
