Rachel Durtschi

JHCA Student

Rachel is a 14-year-old freshman at Wyoming Connections Academy (WYCA).  She lives in Alta, Wyoming. She enjoys engaging in 4-H projects like raising pigs and sewing and playing in the band. When she grows up she would like to “be an art teacher”. Her mother tells her story below.

“Through WYCA our daughter enjoys the resources of public schooling, the benefits of a virtual school and the attention of her own private Learning Coach. I have noticed that Rachel takes more time than the typical student in math and science, but if she is allowed to go at her own pace, she does quite well. I’m glad that she can take more time and I’ve seen the benefits of taking whatever time is needed.

I like the professionalism of the teachers and that there is lots of personal contact between the teachers and the students. The LiveLesson® sessions spark a lot of interest here at home. Rachel loves the live interaction between herself, the teacher, and the other students. The teachers and principal are quick to return calls and are very helpful with issues that come up. I also like that I can give feedback on any lesson or on the school at any time.

Another huge benefit that WYCA offers is flexibility. We have traveled a lot and enjoy making Rachel's social studies classes “come to life”. It is nice to know our daughter has seen some of the things in her textbook firsthand. I like the flexibility of each day’s studies as well as having the flexibility to rearrange studies depending on other activities in our family.”

Rachel likes WYCA because it is flexible and she can go at her own pace.  She says that she likes math best because there are “rules”.  Rachel is very artistic and loves to craft things out of duct tape. She also likes to sew and loves best making her own things without a pattern.  She also loves her 4-H project of market swine.”
