South Carolina Connections Academy FAQs
How did South Carolina Connections Academy come to be?
In Spring 2007, the South Carolina Legislature passed H3097, a bill that allowed virtual charter schools in the state. Parents and educators who came together from around the state to support that legislation then formed a Charter Committee to develop the South Carolina Connections Academy charter school application, which was approved unanimously by the board of the South Carolina Public Charter School District on February 7, 2008. This is South Carolina’s very first statewide virtual charter school.
Who is eligible to attend South Carolina Connections Academy (SCCA)?
Students entering grades K–12 residing anywhere in South Carolina are eligible to attend
Is there anything unique about how the Connections Academy program will work in South Carolina?
Yes. H3097 set some specific standards for virtual charter schools, including a requirement that 25% of instruction be "in real-time." Connections Academy offers a wide range of opportunities for students to participate in direct instruction including real-time, online instruction via LiveLesson® sessions; phone instruction; mandatory state testing sessions; and field trips. Families who enroll should be prepared for more synchronous interaction with their teachers. These opportunities are designed to enhance the learning experience while maintaining as much flexibility as possible for our families. If you have further questions, please contact the school principal.
What kind of technology does my family need to participate?
If you have access to a PC meeting these minimum requirements, any Internet connection, and a printer, then you have all the technology you'll need.
What if I do not have a computer and/or Internet access and/or a printer?
Based on its current budget resources, South Carolina Connections Academy does not provide computers, printers, or an Internet subsidy for students enrolling in the school.
Does Connections Academy provide services and accommodations for students with disabilities?
For students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Connections Academy provides a continuum of virtual special education services that range from consultation, curriculum accommodation and modification, collaboration with learning coaches and general education teachers, to virtual direct instruction. Connections Academy provides students with IEPs with related services, that may include virtual speech language and virtual occupational therapy, as determined by the IEP team. For eligible students with disabilities who do not require special education, Connections Academy develops (as needed) and implements Section 504 plans that detail appropriate accommodations and modifications.
