Frequently Asked Questions
How is Commonwealth Connections Academy (CCA) different from other "cyber-charters" in Pennsylvania?
Commonwealth Connections Academy is the one school in Pennsylvania to offer the Connections Academy program, which is the only program of its kind to be certified nationally by AdvancED. CCA itself has also been accredited by both AdvancED and the Middle States Association. CCA's charter with the Pennsylvania Department of Education was recently renewed for five additional years, with permission to offer grades K–12. Many parents who have explored other cyber-charter schools in Pennsylvania say that CCA provides more intensive teacher support and better technology tools to truly personalize the educational program for your child.
What standardized tests are required for students in CCA?
All students are required to participate in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA). The PSSA is a standards-based, criterion-referenced test "used to measure a student's attainment of the academic standards while also determining the degree to which school programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards."
What technology is provided in Pennsylvania?
Each student in Pennsylvania is eligible to receive the loan of a desktop computer and a printer (grades K–8) or a laptop and printer (grades 9–12). Connections Academy also provides a reimbursement to subsidize the cost of Internet access. Families are able to select their own provider. See the Technology section of the main Connections Academy website for details.
What electives will be available in Pennsylvania?
All electives and clubs are available.
Does Connections Academy provide services and accommodations for students with disabilities?
For students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Connections Academy provides a continuum of virtual special education services that range from consultation, curriculum accommodation and modification, collaboration with learning coaches and general education teachers, to virtual direct instruction. Connections Academy provides students with IEPs with related services, that may include virtual speech language and virtual occupational therapy, as determined by the IEP team. For eligible students with disabilities who do not require special education, Connections Academy develops (as needed) and implements Section 504 plans that detail appropriate accommodations and modifications.
