Ohio Connections Academy Faculty Member Named Teacher of the Year
-- Emily Wallace the first to ever receive honor from Ohio Council of Community Schools --
COLUMBUS, OH (November 29, 2012) – Ohio Connections Academy Fourth Grade Intervention Specialist Emily Wallace was recently named the 2012 Teacher of the Year by the Ohio Council of Community Schools. This is the first time the council has ever handed out this recognition.
Wallace has been a teacher in Ohio for 11 years—six of which have been working as an intervention specialist where she works individually with children experiencing difficulties with their school work. The native of Van Wert, Ohio, Emily received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toledo and a Master’s degree from Bluffton University. She joined Ohio Connections Academy in 2008 and is currently working at the learning center in Worthington.
“I have spent most of my career as a teacher working with students, helping them overcome whatever barriers they face and watching them grow academically. I believe through the online environment I’m more able to respond to the individual needs of each student,” Wallace said. “I really appreciate the recognition the Ohio Council of Community Schools has given me, however helping the children advance is where I truly get the satisfaction from my job.”
According to the OCCS, the purpose of the award is to recognize teachers at OCCS-sponsored schools who demonstrate leadership and a strong commitment to student achievement gains. The teachers were nominated by OCCS-affiliated charter schools and evaluated on their expertise, innovative approach and delivery of their content and how well they engage students. Teachers were also evaluated on how well they align with the school’s mission, curriculum and strategies in the classroom and how they maximize student success.
Wallace currently lives in Columbus. For more information on the OCCS teacher of the year announcement visit www.OhioSchools.org.
