-- Third Tuition-Free Public High School in Michigan to “Blend” College-Prep Education in the Classroom and Online --

ROYAL OAK, MI (March 8, 2013) – High school students in Michigan have a new “blended” college-preparatory, tuition-free public school option near Detroit that delivers the best of online and classroom education in a non-traditional campus setting. Nexus Academy of Royal Oak has been approved for the 2013–14 school year by Central Michigan University, the state’s premier charter authorizer.

“We are thrilled that this brand new campus has been approved to serve high school students in the 2013–14 school year,” said Ronald D. Bush, II, Board Chair of Nexus Academy of Royal Oak and owner of Cloverleaf Consulting Group. “Our certified, full-time teachers trained in blended learning will work with students to develop key skills for life-long success. Students in Greater Metro Detroit deserve this high-quality public school option and we look forward to helping them succeed.”

The academy will serve a maximum of 300 students to ensure personalized attention. Families and students seeking more information about enrollment can visit, call 888–533–6360, or attend free informational meetings hosted by school officials starting early spring 2013.

An open enrollment public high school, Nexus Academy of Royal Oak will join its sister schools in Michigan—Nexus Academy of Grand Rapids and Nexus Academy of Lansing, which both opened for the 2012–13 school year—to offer a comprehensive high school experience in a highly personalized, innovative, and flexible school setting. Students will attend morning or afternoon classes on the school’s unique campus, allowing time in the school day for internships, college dual enrollment, and personal pursuits such as performing arts or sports. Campus-based licensed teachers and “Success Coaches” will help guide students through the curriculum, while guidance counselors and College Advising Services will help them navigate college and career decisions.

“Now students in Royal Oak and the surrounding metro communities can earn an award-winning, college-prep education under a specialized blended learning plan that accommodates and enhances their current academic levels,” said Mickey Revenaugh, co-founder of Connections Education and executive vice president for Connections Learning.

Nexus Academy of Royal Oak will be governed by a local Board of Trustees, while its curriculum and other services will be contracted by Connections Learning, a division of Connections Education a leading provider of high-quality, highly accountable online and blended learning, which is accredited by AdvancED.

School leaders expect Nexus Academy of Royal Oak to appeal to a wide range of students, from those who are ready to accelerate through high school to those who are looking for a more flexible and efficient academic setting that allows them time to pursue career, artistic or athletic interests. All Nexus Academy of Royal Oak students will be provided with a laptop and access to Connexus®, an education management system which offers students the flexibility to learn anywhere they have an internet connection on campus, at home, at libraries, and more.

“We are pleased to welcome Nexus Academy of Royal Oak into our family of schools and to provide high school students with the excellent education options they deserve. This innovative and flexible model will provide an excellent environment for learning,” said Cindy Schumacher, Executive Director of The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools at Central Michigan University.

Nexus Academy of Royal Oak will have a strong focus on academics and college readiness, and will foster an appreciation of lifelong learning. Students will have access to core academic courses in Math, Science, Social Studies, and English as well as Advanced Placement and Honors courses. Foreign language offerings will include Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, German, Latin, and Sign Language. A wide array of electives will provide opportunities for students to explore different subjects like first-of-its-kind Juilliard eLearning music courses, Digital Arts, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Engineering Design, Marine Science, and Game Design. Students may also participate in clubs and activities including Digital Storytelling, Debate and Chess, a Yearbook, an Environmental club, and much more.

School officials are currently finalizing negotiations on a campus site in the Royal Oak area that will integrate with the community’s vital arts and business environment, and are expecting to soon announce both the specific location and Principal. Following a design custom-created by Godshall Kane Architects LLC, a Pennsylvania-based firm that specializes in school spaces, the Nexus Academy of Royal Oak campus will include “team” areas with casual seating for both collaborative and individual work, seminar-style classrooms where students meet with teachers in small groups, hands-on science and art labs, and an exercise studio with gym equipment and unique fitness options such as yoga and access to qualified personal trainers.

The enrollment process officially opened at Nexus Academy of Royal Oak on March 4, 2013, for the 2013–14 school year. For more information, visit or call 888–533–6360.
