-- Tuition-Free “Blended” Public High School Redefines Education for 21st Century Learners, Melding Classroom and e-learning in Unique Campus Environment --

INDIANAPOLIS (February 5, 2013) – Indianapolis high school students will have an exciting new “blended” public school option for the 2013–14 school year that delivers a truly 21st century high school experience. Nexus Academy of Indianapolis, a “blended” public high school that combines the best of online and classroom learning in a dynamic campus setting, has been unanimously approved by the Indiana Charter School Board for the 2013–14 school year.

Nexus Academy of Indianapolis is a tuition-free, open enrollment, college preparatory public high school for 21st century learners. Intentionally small sized, the school will serve a maximum of 300 students to ensure each student receives focused, personal attention. It will offer a comprehensive high school experience in a highly personalized, innovative, and flexible school setting. Students will attend the school’s uniquely designed physical campus, where dedicated, certified teachers specially trained in blended learning interact with students both online and on-site. Campus-based “Success Coaches” help guide students through the curriculum, and guidance counselors will help them navigate college and career decisions.

Students will attend classes on a morning or afternoon session, ensuring an optimal student-to-staff ratio while allowing time in the school day for internships, college dual enrollment, and pursuit of personal passions such as sports or performing arts. All Nexus Academy of Indianapolis students will be provided with a mobile computer and other technology tools, allowing them to work anywhere within the Nexus Academy school as well as beyond, 24/7.

“We’re delighted that Nexus Academy of Indianapolis was unanimously approved by the Indiana Charter School Board, and look forward to welcoming students in the 2013–14 school year,” said Mickey Revenaugh, co-founder of Connections Education and executive vice president for Connections Learning. “Nexus Academy of Indianapolis will provide an engaging and high-quality public school experience that prepares students for success beyond high school in a truly intimate and personalized way.”

“Indianapolis high school students deserve learning opportunities that will prepare them for the next step in their lives, whether that’s college or a career, and Nexus Academy will offer that,” notes Jeff Reed, board chairman of Better Blended Learning for Indiana, the non-profit organization that holds the charter. “Nexus Academy will provide its students access to great teachers, fun and challenging ways to learn, and a safe, college-style environment. We look forward to serving Hoosier families through this new, high-quality public school option.”

Enrollment will officially open at Nexus Academy of Indianapolis on March 4, 2013 for the 2013–14 school year, but the school has already begun outreach throughout the Indianapolis metro area. A robust education management system, Connexus®, will tie the online community together and provide students with access to lessons anywhere they have an Internet connection.

School officials are currently exploring campus sites in and around the greater Indianapolis area, and will soon announce both the school’s location and its Principal. Following a design custom-created by Godshall Kane Architects LLC, a Pennsylvania-based firm that specializes in school spaces, the Nexus Academy of Indianapolis campus will include “team” areas with casual seating for both collaborative and individual work, seminar-style classrooms where students meet with teachers in small groups, hands-on science and art labs, a café, and a fitness center outfitted with gym equipment and offering unique fitness options through qualified personal trainers.
