Clubs & Activities
At Florida Virtual School we understand that connecting with other students is one of the most important parts of a great school experience. That's why we offer more clubs and activities than any other online school. Whether a student is interested in chess, robotics, art, poetry, the environment and so much more, we have the perfect club. Learn about the clubs & activities that are available to students of all ages:
Clubs & Activities for Grades K–5
Arts and Crafts
This club encourages students to create crafts using materials found at home and in nature. Projects include making tie-dye shirts, candles, and an igloo.
Book Club
Participants read selected books and share their observations with each other. Using online prompts, the club facilitator guides and encourages group discussion.
Chess Club
Members learn, socialize, and play in an atmosphere of friendly competition. After completing a tutorial, students are matched with competitors of the same skill level, and the online games begin. Students can even participate in an end-of-year tournament using an exclusive gaming site.
Environmental Club
Students develop an individual awareness of their contribution to, and effect on, the environment. Members exchange ideas about ways to keep our planet clean and discuss such global issues as alternative energy, trash collection and recycling, and allocating limited resources. Activities show students how they can influence these issues on a local level. Members also hear from experts and professionals who work on environmental issues.
Math Club I
Students take part in a math competition by playing interactive games on the First in Math® website. The online play reinforces a wide range of skills, from simple addition to solving for x- and y-variables. Students work at their own pace, and earn points as they master various concepts and practice test-prep exercises geared to appropriate grade levels.
Math Club II
In this club, students have access to the multiplayer version of DimensionMTM*, a web-based interactive math game that mixes learning with adventure. As members play against other students in real time, they encounter a variety of challenges and environments catered to fit their individual skill set.
Pen Pals
It’s a new twist on a classic way to build friendships. Students develop their skills in letter writing, written expression, and penmanship while making friends with other FLVS FT students.
Poetry Corner
This club introduces the student to various simple poetic forms. The student also studies poetic language, learning how to convey ideas, situations, and feelings in inventive and original ways with simple literary devices. The student is prompted to write poetry and short stories and then share them on the Poetry Corner message boards.
Quiz Bowl
During this weekly academic competition, elementary students are tested using their knowledge of fun facts. Winners are named at the end of the year.
Robotics Club
Members of this club focus on the origins, applications, and latest trends in robotics. They work individually to learn how robots are built and controlled, then move on to exciting group challenges, such as working together where they try to make a robot successfully complete a task. No previous computer coding experience is needed, and no materials are required for participation.
Science in the Kitchen
Young students are encouraged to apply their research skills and scientific knowledge by conducting experiments using household items. The student’s own kitchen doubles as a laboratory for conducting safe, simple experiments. Club members then discuss their results online with fellow students.
Clubs & Activities for Grade 6–8
Art Club
The Art Club sparks students’ creativity by exploring art, photography, and graphic design. Students are exposed to the nuances of each medium and have the opportunity to create and share their own creative designs. Weekly online forums let students interact with art experts.

Broadcast Club
Students learn about the history and new trends of broadcast media and have an opportunity to share their work with peers. Throughout the year, students explore the growth of print (from newspapers to blogs), audio (from radio shows to podcasts), and video (from television to Internet videos).
Chess Club
Members learn, socialize, and play in an atmosphere of friendly competition. After completing a tutorial, students are matched with competitors of the same skill level, and the online games begin. Students can even participate in our end-of-year tournament using an exclusive gaming site.
Debate Club
While discussing and debating current events, students learn the arts of debate and critical thinking as they use such skills as brainstorming, topic research, and presentation. The club facilitators help students develop position statements, supporting arguments, and analytical thinking.
Environmental Club
Members develop an awareness of the environment as they exchange ideas about keeping our planet clean and hear from environmental experts. They discuss such global issues as alternative energy and recycling and learn how they can influence these issues on a local level.
Math Club I

The Monitor: Student Newspaper
The Monitor is a student-managed, student-staffed monthly newspaper. As they work together, students learn about group dynamics, organization strategies, and team-building exercises while researching, writing, and editing stories on current events, sports, entertainment, and fashion.
National History Day Club
Members sharpen their research skills as they create a documentary, research paper, exhibit, performance, or website about a topic of historical importance. Each year’s theme is chosen by the National History Day Committee. Students learn how to use primary documents properly, analyze information critically, and revise effectively.

Student Leadership and Service Club
Members develop and promote service projects for the community. Guest speakers address the club on a variety of topics related to leadership.
Clubs & Activities for Grades 9–12
Commissioner’s Academic Challenge
Students compete against other students throughout the state in this club.
Earth Day
FLVS FT pays tribute to the planet through recognition of Earth Day. Students participate in activities to raise awareness of sustainable uses of natural resources, participate in a contest, or attend an educational symposium online.
Florida History Fair and National History Day
The History Fair is the state history contest between students; winners at the state level advance to National History Day. Each year, students participate by choosing a historical topic, conducting primary and secondary research, and presenting their results as a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, or website.
Future Business Leaders of America
This club prepares students for “real-world” professional experiences and provides travel opportunities, challenging competitions, scholarships and prizes, leadership development, community service experience, friendship, and fun.
Hispanic Heritage Festival
Students learn about the many countries, cultures, and important figures in this schoolwide celebration of Hispanic heritage.
History Club
Members enjoy field trips to historical sites, book and movie discussion historians, and participate in the Florida
History Fair and National History Day.
Human Rights Day
Students learn about the missions of global human rights organizations and what they can do to help. A hosted webinar is also held with guest speakers.
International Club
Activities celebrate and promote an understanding of and respect for the diverse cultures, languages, and heritages of the students in our school, local communities, and beyond.
Latin Club
This club encourages an interest among students for an appreciation of the culture, language, and literature of ancient Rome.
Literacy Corner
Students participate in weekly literacy contests and other exciting programs to increase their understanding and appreciation of literature.
Model United Nations
An authentic UN simulation teaches students how to use 21st century skills to address real-world problems by using collaboration, digital literacy, writing, diplomacy, and debate. Members travel around the state to attend conferences and discuss issues affecting their own and future generations.
National English Honor Society
Members serve as tutors for the English Tutor Room, and they host several online book discussions, the African American Read-In, and other events. See if you qualify!
Spanish Honor Society
This club is for students taking upper-level Spanish who want to explore more of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
Newspaper Club
Students work together to publish the school newspaper while researching and writing stories and learning about group dynamics and organization strategies.
Science Club
Members participate in the Virtual Science Fair, Science Olympiad, book clubs, conservation activities, and much more.
Shakespeare Festival
Students explore the life and works of William Shakespeare and exchange their ideas through blogs and online sessions devoted to selected Shakespearean works.
STEM Career Fair
FLVS and the Florida Department of Education partner to put
on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) Career Fair where students can listen to guest speakers discuss their careers.
STRIVE College and Career Expo
Inspiring speakers, student presentations, school counselors, and other experts help students explore various careers and find out what education options are available.
Student Ambassador
Students can become an authorized representative of FLVS FT and help moderate online events and activities, assist at in-person events, participate in focus groups, assist with FLVS FT’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, and much more.
WorldFest
During this international, interactive virtual event, students celebrate and share cultures and traditions through art, music, history, holidays, fashion, and more.
