When she was five years old, a rainy day in Southern California turned out to be a propitious event for Mirai when her mother, Ikuko, decided to take her ice skating instead of heading to the links. Mirai reminisces, “That’s when I knew I wanted to keep skating … bye-bye, golf!” And that turned out to be a fortuitous decision. During her career as a skater, Mirai has competed at the highest levels and has many accomplishments, including: the 2011 Four Continents bronze medalist, 2007 JGP Final champion, a two-time medalist at the World Junior Championships, and a four-time U.S. national medalist.

Through hard work, success followed when in 2008 Mirai became the second youngest in history to win the U.S. senior ladies’ figure skating title. The year 2009 was also momentous: she changed her coach to Frank Carroll and transferred to California Connections Academy, which “allowed me to follow my extensive training schedule without the stress of missing so many school days.” Mirai explained further, “The online learning system let me take ‘school’ with me all over the world, and I could choose when and where to do my schoolwork.” A recent graduate, Mirai has been accepted at the University of California, Irvine.

After representing the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics and placing fourth, her goal is to take part in and medal at the 2014 Olympic Games. “I think the timing will be good, since I’ll be 20 and have the experience and maturity.” Mirai’s name means future in Japanese, and hers seems very bright.

"I like Connections Academy because the online learning system let me take ‘school’ with me all over the world, and I could choose when and where to do my schoolwork."
