Sandra’s son struggled in traditional bricks-and-mortar schools mainly because he was on the autism spectrum and was diagnosed with ADD along with ADHD. With California Connections Academy’s one-on-one instruction, interactive lessons, and great teacher support, he is excelling and getting ready for college.

From a very early age, my son started having problems at school, ones that were beyond what was typical for his peers. He couldn’t seem to follow his teachers’ instructions. Soon, my son became the object of his classmates’ ridicule. My husband and I felt that there was a medical reason for his behavior. After working with his doctor, we gradually learned that he was on the autism spectrum. He was also diagnosed with ADD along with ADHD. I could not fault his teachers and classmates for isolating my sweet son, as his behavior was extreme. At the same time, I realized that my son could not excel in a typical classroom. My husband and I watched helplessly as our seven-year-old son fell into depression and became even more isolated. We knew we had to take more action to help our son academically as well as socially. Academically, we realized that his behavior problems stemmed from his inability to focus and stay on topic, and this presented an impossible task for a teacher with a class of twenty children. My son needed individual attention and unique instruction to move him through the lessons and help him improve his grades. I withdrew him from the brick-and-mortar school and tried homeschooling through the school district, but I felt that even this venue was inappropriate. I started to research online schools extensively and eventually choose California Connections Academy.

Right from the beginning, Connections Academy appealed to my young son and piqued his interest. With one-on-one instruction from his Learning Coach (me) and the online teachers, my son gradually came out of his shell and began to excel! Flipping through the tabs with the online instruction caused my son to become very interactive with his lessons. He enjoyed the various short films that accompany many of the lessons. Having the lessons within arm’s length and by limiting distractions, my son was able to focus on the task presented to him and progress steadily though the lessons. Soon, months became years, and my son is still blooming in his studies. He is now in his junior year and has earned a high GPA. He consistently achieves high scores on his STAR tests. We couldn’t be more proud. California Connections Academy does have clubs and trips to help children interact, but one of the shining jewels of this school is found in my son’s online speech group, which allows him to interact with other children who have his level of social dilemmas. He is prompted by an excellent speech instructor who teaches social skills. I can’t believe all that Michael has overcome through this very tough journey. Now, I look at my six-foot son who has just started to grow chin hair and almost cry about how well he has turned out. California Connections Academy and I are working very hard to get him ready for college. We expect great things from him. I would like to thank California Connections Academy, not only for the excellent program but also for all the conscientious teachers who worked so hard over the years to give my son extra help (and, more important, the one-on-one attention) and academic instruction.

Irene’s three boys, one with special needs and two in the Gifted and Talented program, are doing very well in California Connections Academy.

HI! I’m Irene Burgess. I have three boys in this school. I found California Connections Academy when searching for a different kind of educational experience. Bricks-and-mortar schooling didn’t challenge my children academically. My sons were bored at their previous school, but now, at Connections Academy, they are able to learn in a way that excites them.

Having a child with special needs has been very difficult, yet Connections Academy has embraced my family and given us better tools to further our sons’ educations. The staff is really an extension of our family because they care so much. They are here to make sure the entire family is having a successful educational experience. With Connections Academy, I am given all the tools I need to be a great Learning Coach. With all of this wonderful help, I know my boys are getting a fantastic education.

My children receive more one-on-one help at California Connections Academy than they did in a traditional bricks-and-mortar school. The teachers at California Connections Academy really reach out to their students through WebMail messages, phone calls, and LiveLesson® sessions. The curriculum is wonderful and offers different ways to learn the information. I love the hands-on approach that virtual school offers. Also, my children receive actual textbooks and other educational equipment for their classes.

We have made wonderful new friends through Connections Academy, too. On the field trips, we and other California Connections Academy families get together and have such a great time. My boys send WebMail messages to their friends and talk on the phone. In their previous school, my boys were constantly being bullied. Being teased and harassed on a daily basis was wearing on them. They were becoming reclusive, were arguing with each other all the time, and were losing their self-esteem. They didn’t want to go to school. But now my boys like school! They love learning, and attending Connections Academy is allowing my children to learn the way they want to learn in a relaxing, nonstressful environment.

Changing from overcrowded, underfunded classrooms to the safe, flexible, personalized online education offered by Connections Academy was a great choice that Kimberly made for her granddaughter.

As a grandmother, I chose Connections Academy to give my granddaughter the best education she deserves. My husband and I have raised her since she was one month old, and as the days turned to years, it was time to enroll her into public school for kindergarten. I volunteered five days a week and saw firsthand how crowded the schools are, with so many kids per class and only one teacher. I witnessed many kids who were unable to understand the teacher during lessons. Since it was impossible for the teacher to work one-on-one with the students, she would often move on to the next subject before they had grasped the material, leaving them confused and falling behind. There seemed to always be a shortage of supplies, too. My granddaughter would often catch sicknesses from the other children, so I would have to buy sanitizer and Kleenex for the rooms. Also, the kids were constantly bullying each other, which started to lower my granddaughter’s self-esteem. I knew that something had to be done.

At the end of our granddaughter’s first day of first grade, the new teacher said to my husband, “She has an attitude with a capital A.” He brought her home and she never went back. I would have said to that teacher that whenever you give a parent negative feedback, you should always follow up with a positive, such as, “And we are going to work on that.”

Since traditional public school was no longer an option, I started researching our alternatives. We decided on Connections Academy and are so grateful that we did. They make the experience of schooling at home easy and convenient for my family. This is our fourth year, and we have no regrets. The teachers are so helpful. Any time you need them, they are there to answer any questions. I feel like my granddaughter’s education is personalized to meet her specific learning needs. I’m able to recognize when she doesn’t comprehend the lesson, and we are able to try different angles until she does. This program is very flexible and allows you to adjust the schooling to your specific lifestyle. We purchased a laptop for when we travel, which allows us to do her schoolwork on the road.

Elaine’s daughter has been with Connections Academy since 2006. She has made great academic progress and great friends.

My student has been with California Connections Academy since 2006 and loves it! I am able to see firsthand how she is progressing academically. The feedback that she receives from her teachers is both insightful and constructive. This allows her to get a clear understanding of what she did well and what she can work on for the future. The LiveLesson® sessions provide an opportunity to engage in a classroom-like environment so she can communicate with her teachers and her classmates without brick-and-mortar classroom distractions.

The curriculum is challenging enough to keep her on her toes, but the independent learning allows her to fully grasp a concept before moving forward. This opportunity prevents her from losing confidence and allowing grades to slip. She communicates either by phone, through WebMail, or at school functions with her teachers, which she truly enjoys.

We have met the most amazing families who have become great friends! Although they may not live right next door, we can communicate through technology or plan get-togethers either with the school or on our own.

We are thrilled to have found such an incredible school that provides an excellent curriculum, supportive teachers, helpful administration, and wonderful friends!

Irene’s son loves the support and resources he receives from his teachers, as well as the flexibility in his schedule that allows him to enjoy extracurricular activities.

My son and I joined Connections Academy in 2008. Knowing the importance of education, my husband and I decided to school our son at home, but we wanted him to receive a high-quality education from an accredited public virtual school. As I researched potential schools, I was impressed by the curriculum, resources, clubs, and field trips that California Connections Academy had to offer. Not once have we regretted our decision to enroll our son in virtual school.

My son has always done well in all his studies, but this year was a little different. He needed help with the criteria of writing. The insightful choices of the language arts staff led to the delivery of invaluable courses and online resources that provided my son with the assistance and knowledge he needed to do well in writing.

In addition to providing a stellar curriculum, California Connections Academy also offers a vast array of field trips in our county and many surrounding ones as well, which is of great importance so that my son has time for socialization with other children. We have met some of the most wonderful families and are looking forward to building new relationships.

Thanks to Connections Academy, and to the wonderful teachers, my son is a joyous young man who is excelling.

Lisa's son, who started with Wyoming Connections Academy in 2011, is now a student at California Connections Academy, as he and his family had relocated to Southern California. Since starting Connections Academy, Lisa’s son has experienced a complete turnabout, turning anxiety into well-rounded success.

As our son came into the school-age years, he received assistance through the Special Education Program for the sensory-integration problems he had from being a premature baby. With this help he developed skills, but his anxiety was still there.

When we moved to Wyoming, his anxiety increased and the assistance decreased. I had been studying up on homeschooling, but I was afraid to be responsible for his future on my own. I ventured into extracurricular educational activities on the computer, and found these to be fun for him. The more I talked to different parents about homeschooling and my concerns about my son’s anxiety, the more I knew I needed to find a solution.

When I discovered Wyoming Connections Academy, I jumped on the chance. Enrolling him has been the best decision. His anxiety is manageable; he enjoys his outside social clubs like 4-H and scouting; and he even has friends now. He has done a complete turnabout from his previous resistance to talk to people, and he even initiates conversations now. Many parents who knew him before he started Connections Academy ask what we have done to help him be such a happy, well-rounded young man. We tell them that we put him in a virtual school that works with us and with Alexander’s needs.

He participates in the virtual LiveLesson® sessions every other week and participates in the chat room with the other students. Connections Academy teachers teach with many different styles. An example is when his teacher assured him that she understood his anxiety about speaking: She would talk, give him an assignment of “tell me what this word means and email it to me,” then respond back with high praise for his abilities. Baby steps, challenges, try another way, work together as a team for my child’s success. That’s what Connections Academy has done for our family.

Because his son’s class size increased at his previous school, Carl became aware that his son’s performance was dropping in math. Now, as a student at California Connections Academy, Dylan is doing very well in all of his subjects.

My son Dylan enrolled as a student in California Connections Academy in 2012. He is currently a fifth grader. Dylan initially performed well at his former school. However, as he progressed through each grade, his performance dropped, especially in math. One thing we believed to be causing this was the increasing number of students in his class each year. We felt that when he need a little more attention from the teacher in his brick-and-mortar classroom, the teacher was unable to spend extra time with him during regular school hours. Although there was never an issue with bullying at his traditional school, it was something that my wife and I felt Dylan wouldn’t handle well if it did become an issue. So, we began looking into alternatives for his education.

Since joining Connections Academy, Dylan has done well in all his subjects, including math. It is hard work for him and for me, his Learning Coach. Still, if he isn’t quite grasping a certain aspect of a subject or is struggling during a lesson, the flexibility of the curriculum allows us to focus on the areas where he is having difficulty. We’re able to go over the lessons as often as we like. If we both feel that things are not coming together, it is quite easy for us to bring up the issue during a LiveLesson® session or in a WebMail or phone call to his teacher, who provides further assistance.

I’ve found California Connections Academy to be an excellent way for my son to progress with his education—at a level we are both happy with. I feel that the Connections Academy experience provides a great foundation for Dylan’s future higher-education opportunities. After researching the alternative education options available, my wife and I are very pleased with our final choice.

Jodi’s son, who is in elementary school, loves to tell people that he attends a virtual school. Jodi loves that they can personalize their schedule. She appreciates the flexibility that online learning offers them.

My son was in second grade at the traditional school he had attended since kindergarten. It was becoming apparent that it was not the right fit for him. His issues ranged from attention deficits to bullying. He needed individualized attention and an enjoyable environment in which to learn. He was barely earning passing scores and often complained about completing work and attending school. I looked into online schools in the area. A co-worker’s children were enrolled in California Connections Academy. My family began enrollment at the end of my son’s second grade year so we would be set for third grade online.

The change in my son has been outstanding! We have personalized our schedule, and we love the flexibility that online learning gives us. My son now enjoys school and loves telling people that he attends a virtual school from home. I am so happy that we made the decision to join Connections Academy.
